Automotive Industry Work

I’m an in-house UX architect working with leading media brands in the automotive vertical industry. Between them, our brands provide a suite of tools that allow consumers to research new and used vehicles; calculate fair-market prices for their current vehicles and for prospective vehicles; search for local vehicles for sale; evaluate financing options and special offers from dealers and manufacturers; and buy, sell and trade-in vehicles.

Our UX practice is growing and evolving. Our team is comprised of UX leaders, architects, content strategists and copywriters, interaction designers, visual designers, and user researchers. My role includes upstream work such as information architecture audits and modeling, pattern library standards creation and documentation, preparing materials for user testing, and collaborative front-end UI framework evolutions. I also do downstream work such as regular support of our agile teams, working with design teams as they solution through experience opportunities and problems. Coaching designers on systems thinking, group critiques and stakeholder communications are all part of the role.

Innovations and disruptions in the auto industry, such as ride-sharing services and vehicle sharing clubs, driverless cars, and increasingly connected cars are creating entirely new ways for consumers to interact with vehicles. All of that pioneering needs a whole lotta UX TLC. It’s a great time to be working in experience design in the auto space.

iOS App Design Project

Direction Setting + Interaction Design + Prototyping

The project brief called for the design of a native iOS app, with the working title Lunch Money Buddy, that would allow parents or guardians to manage a lunch money funds account for students in the local school system. The app would bill a credit card or bank account, eliminating the need for students to carry cash, and giving parents visibility and peace of mind. Other requested app functions included a lunch menu calendar and tools to establish user alert preferences that notify when favorite meals (per child) are approaching. Client provided materials were: a short list of app functional requirements, and two user personas, created as composite characters based on research on target users. Experience designers and projects teams leverage personas to workshop identification of user needs and to build empathy with users.

The scope of the design work included: creation of a user journey map to visualize and communicate to stakeholders the app usage lifecycle; creation of app sitemap an app navigation structure recommendations; low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes to map and optimize user task flows; and a functional, interactive prototype that could be used to review designs with stakeholders and to conduct usability testing with representative target users.
